Desktop Icons & Keyboard Mapping Preview
The upcoming VU 8.5 involves considerable improvements to the User Interface. The new layout will include completely customizable keyboard mapping features, and the ability to create desktop icons.
Introduction
The new user interface allows you to completely customize your desktop layout through the use of:
- Desktop Icons
- Action Sets
- Keyboard Maps
The following picture is the default setup that new participants will meet when they first login. Existing participants will find their Quick Bars converted to Action Sets and HUD Icons to the Global Action Set.
The Edit Panel
The Edit Panel is the central component and must be activated for all configuration changes to your desktop layout and functionality.
The Edit Panel is activated from the Action Library, by clicking the Edit Panel Icon.
Once activated, the Edit Panel provides access to:
- Desktop Icons
- the Action Set Panel
- the Keyboard Map
- the Action Library
- the Inventory
- a Reset Default Settings Option
The Edit Panel also contains a Trash Can where Icons can be removed and disposed of.
Desktop Icons
Desktop Icons can now be created for your favorite tools, weapons and actions by simply dragging their icons from the Inventory and Action Library directly onto the desktop.
The Edit Panel must always be open for all configurations. Move and position Desktop Icons by grabbing the black frame that appears when the cursor moves over them. Desktop Icons are deleted by dragging the center area of the icon to the Trash Can in the Edit Panel.
Desktop Icons may be grouped using snap logic.
Lock the positioning of Desktop Icons by closing the Edit Panel.
Desktop Icons will then be stored into the active Action Set.
Action Sets
Up to nine Action Sets may be created for easy access to specific groups of equipment and actions. Mapped to your favorite keys, you may for example, wish to have a hunting set containing your favorite weapons and medical equipment, or a mining set with all your mining tools.
Once mapped to your favorite keys, the assigned equipment or actions can easily be activated by the simple pressing of a key.
Aside from key mapping, free standing Desktop Icons can also be part of an Action Set, easily activated by clicking them with your mouse.
By creating Actions Sets you can quickly and easily change sets depending on which situation you may be in, using the Action Set Panel.
The Action Set Panel
In simple mode, the Action Set Panel allows you to change and activate Actions Sets using the left and right white arrow points.
Advanced Mode is activated using the downward pointing arrow. In order to access Advanced Mode you must enable the Advanced Action Set Mode in the Options Interface. The Advanced mode allows you to display any number of Action Sets using the left column buttons.
Please Note: Displaying all Action Sets initially may be confusing as the Action Sets will appear on top of each other. Try to move each Action Set individually before displaying them all.
Move an Action Set by first opening the Edit Panel. Activate the Action Set you wish to move using the Action Set Panel. By grabbing the left most icon in the Action Set you will be able to move the entire Action Set. Drop the Action Set where you wish and close the Edit Panel to store its position.
Remember, in order to reconfigure or reposition Action Sets the Edit Panel must be opened.
The Keyboard Map
The Keyboard Map allows you to assign tools, weapons or actions to specific keys on your keyboard. By activating the desired Action Set, icons may be dragged from the Inventory or Action Library and assigned to a key.
Nine Actions Sets are available, which can be customized exactly as you wish.
Note that Desktop Icons are NOT automatically created during Keyboard Mapping and must be created separately if desired.
The Global Action Set
The Global Action Set, designated by an asterix(*) is always available irrespective of which Action Set you may currently have activated.
With the Edit Panel open, the Global Action Set can be configured by selecting the * symbol in the Advanced Action Set Panel.
The Global Action Set is a great place to keep your most important tools, weapons, actions or system functions like your Map and the EU Transaction Center - things you always want close at hand.
Help
Don't forget to use the Help Texts included. The Help Texts are easily displayed using the '?' symbol.

EBN: Pristine Lands Found 19 Jun 2006
The Imperial Explorers continue to map the vast land areas in the northern reaches of Amethera, with new species of wildlife and flora being catalogued. In order to allow for the smooth expansion of the ever-growing colonist population, the Imperial government has decreed that almost all land areas discovered will be divided into sellable lots as soon as possible. This process should be finalized during the summer.
EBN: Explorer feedback 16 Jun 2006
Members of the Imperial Explorer Department have sent word about their latest endeavor, mapping the Calypso surface. Although communications are constantly failing due to magnetic lag storms one image came through to EBN, which shows a currently pristine area.
